Al-Aleem is the emphatic form of the word Aleem (knower) and draws its roots from Ilm or knowledge. This attribute appears many times in the Quran to remind us how encompassing the nature of Allah is. Allah has perfect and absolute knowledge and nothing is hidden from Him. Allah knows the outward and inward, the revealed and the hidden, the unseen, the past, present and future. He knows what is good for us and what will harm us. Our desires and our longings. He knows our tricks and tendencies. So anything that we do – in the most hidden of states, in solitude, in the veil of night and brightness of day – everything is in the knowledge of Allah. He knows the secrets of the hearts and things to which we give words.
And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted? (TMQ 67:13-14)
Thus Allah’s knowledge comprehends everything, is neither acquired, nor preceded by ignorance nor followed by forgetfulness. With this recognition we should also become humble as we realize that knowledge of Allah is complete and nothing escapes from Him. Thus we should be careful of Allah at all times and states and should be hopeful in times of hardship and despair. Indeed it is true what Allah says in the Quran:
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is in a clear record (TMQ 6:59)
Furthermore, it is only Al Aleem who knows the true nature of our being. He reserves the right to dictate us on how to live rightly as individuals and as a society. He reserves the rights to dictate our true ‘rights and responsibilities’. Only He should have the authority to define ‘gender roles’. If human tries to ‘outsmart’ Al-Aleem by crafting new ‘theories’, which are but conjectures, he is not going to be damned only in the hereafter but in this world too – by a rift being created into his family and society or by some other plans of the All-Knowing, All-Wise.
