Sunnah of Males at Home

Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is, after the Quran, most important source of guidance for the humankind. Let’s learn the conduct of men at home from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

  • One of the beautiful Sunnah is to be kind towards one’s spouse and children. This certainly helps in attaining happiness which can’t be attained by harshness. Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Aysha relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When Allah – may He be Glorified – wills some good towards the people of a household, He introduces kindness among them.'” (Musnad Ahmad and Sahih Jami)
  • Another important Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is to help in household works. Aysha RA relates that Messenger of Allah ﷺ “sew his own clothes, mend his own shoes and do whatever other work men do in their homes.” (Musnad Ahmad and Sahih Jami). Another report by her relates: “He was like any other human being: he would clean clothes, milk his ewe and serve himself.”(Musnad Ahmad) She also says that: “He used to serve his family, then when the time for prayer came, he would go out to pray.” (Reported by al-Bukhari).
  • Yet another Sunnah at home is being affectionate towards family members and joking with them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “All things that a Muslim man does for entertainment are in vain except for shooting arrows, training his horse and playing with his wife, for these are things that bring reward.” (Ibn Majah). Hazrat Abdullah ibn Jafar RA said: “Whenever the Prophet ﷺ came back from a journey, we would be taken out to meet him. One day we met him, Hasan, Husayn and I. He carried one of us in front of him, and another on his back, until we entered Madinah.” (Reported by Muslim)
  • Resisting bad behavior and characteristics like lying, backbiting, gossip, etc. amongst the members of the household is also a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Hazrat Aysha RA reported: “If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to know that one of his household had told a lie, he would try to ignore him until he repented.”(Musnad Ahmad and Sahih Jami)
